Contract True Crime Senior Reporter / Producer

We’re hiring an experienced reporter / producer to quickly report and write a true crime limited series.

Western Sound is a podcast production company based in Los Angeles, Calif. We’re hiring an experienced true crime reporter / producer to investigate a series of crimes committed by a group of individuals and then write an 8-episode limited series based on that reporting.

This is a fully remote, contract position based in Los Angeles, CA that will start in March and is estimated to be completed at the end of July. The reporter / producer will be responsible for finding sources; conducting interviews; interfacing with the courts, police, prosecutors office, and other lawyers to acquire materials; synthesizing the narrative; and writing the scripts to be read by the host.

Candidates for this position should have experience reporting and writing limited series / true crime podcasts. They should be very organized and efficient. They should have a track record of finding difficult sources and convincing them to go on record. They should have experience reporting, structuring, and writing complex stories; a facility with broadcast-style writing; and a working knowledge of audio editing software (Descript and/or Pro Tools preferred).

About you:

  • You have a minimum 2 years experience reporting and producing true crime limited series podcasts with at least one successful true crime show under your belt
  • You are completely at ease with all facets of audio reporting – from using gear to cutting tape to stringing out and writing complete stories
  • You have a working knowledge of audio editing software (this project will use Descript and Pro Tools)
  • You’re a very good long form audio writer: you know how to structure stories and episodes; broadcast-style writing comes very easy to you, as does writing to tape in creative ways
